Who is she? *

Ang Van Den Eeden graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Spring 2025 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art, completing a dual focus degree in Ceramics and Sculpture. While in school, they were awarded a Support for Undergraduate Fellows (SURF) Grant for special effect glaze chemistry research at UWM with their professor, Geryn Roche. Ang continues to use their research findings to dabble in glaze-wizardry—creating ceramic forms that flaunt a glaze’s ability to shine, puff, and gloop.

Ang lives and works in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, teaching ceramic workshops and is on staff as the Community Manager at Tooth & Nail Studio. They’re the people person over there: facilitating the membership program, working with workshop participants to expand their clay knowledge in class and during the studio’s Open Studio hours. They also work closely with the studio’s resident “Dirtbag” to create public programming around the artist like Critique Nights, Resident Workshops, and Artist’s Receptions.

Their works are inspired by their love of imaginative novels dealing with themes of interior transformation and humor, like The Idiot by Elif Batuman and the Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman.

What's she about? *

I'm all about clay. One of my very first memories is playing on a mini pottery wheel in preschool, absolutely loving the texture of the clay as it slipped through my hands, and then promptly squashing what I’d made back into an unrecognizable blob, only to delightfully start all over again.

My childhood delight didn’t disappear when I returned to pottery in my early 20s while living in San Francisco. The satisfyingly squishy and moldable nature of clay’s materiality hadn’t lost its appeal, and before I knew it, I was spending all my free time playing around with clay.

Whenever I’m thinking about new projects, I try to imagine that the forms I’m creating are making a vibrant inquiry into what it means to grow and change, yet still somehow stay yourself.

Experimenting is the name of the game when it comes to creating a new pathway in my practice and exploring ideas of somehow staying the same through change, using glaze materials.

Pictured here is a series of test tiles showing how different weights and positioning of a “gloop” glaze affect the dripability. Another set shows how varying amounts of silicon carbide affect the puffability of a foaming glaze.

In ceramics, there is a certain unpredictability about what happens in the kiln. When I’m creating new forms, this is what I look forward to the most. I’m excited to see how the gloop, puff, and crawling glazes react to the dimensions of the sculptures.
